Lovers Leap

an ongoing multi-modal expanded cinema work that investigates Appalachian identity, mediation and representation across mediums.

installed at the 2023 Black Mountain College (Re) Happening in Black Mountain, NC on the former campus of the Black Mountain College

throughout the day of the installation, attendees could draw and write on the screens where the found footage film was projected, thus making a literal and metaphorical mark on Appalachia, and engaging with the question “who is/who mediates Appalachia”

Lovers Leap (Single Channel)

Blends found footage collage film with modern dance to investigate Appalachian representation and mediation.

The found footage film is a layering of Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring (16mm), a mid-century Appalachian educational film (16mm), and a 1980s Western NC tourism video (VHS) that creates a collage of different representations of Appalachia across multiple mediums and time.
